Many will be shocked by the disorder in Middlesbrough on Sunday 4th August. A significant number of both the church and the wider community will have been directly affected by the disturbances. How do we respond as Christians to such troubles?

There are three things I would say:

  • First, thank you, God, for the police. Thank God for the police and the other emergency services. They did a fantastic job in very difficult circumstances. Let’s keep them and their families in our prayers.
  • Second, pray for justice. Let’s pray that those responsible for the disorder are swiftly brought to justice – and that the person responsible for the Southport killings likewise faces justice. A functioning justice system is a key part of God’s plan for community life.
  • Third, remember what is good. Middlesbrough is much more than the disorder we have just witnessed. It is a town with many great qualities and great people. Let’s pray that all the people of Middlesbrough pull together in the coming months to ensure the town is in the news for the right reasons. Specifically, Middlesbrough is home to people of many nationalities and faiths. Each person is made by God and valued by God. Christ died for each person in Middlesbrough. And each person in this town should feel safe to go about their lives.

St Barnabas has for many years prayed for the peace of Middlesbrough and sought to bless the community in a wide range of ways. The events of the last 24 hours are a reminder of why this is central to the gospel. These efforts will need to be redoubled in the days ahead.

If you, or someone in your household is struggling as a result of the recent disturbances, feel free to get in touch with myself, Lindsey or James.

On Sunday 11th August at 6.30pm, our normal evening worship will include extended time to pray for Middlesbrough. Please do join that time of prayer and encourage others to do the same.
